Writing Songs for Children to Sing That are Catchy Yet Meaningfull

When I write a song I always write what an English teacher might call the "topic sentence"--that is one sentence that sums up the main idea of the song. I usually put that main idea into the Chorus. Inspired by the children singing during their Sunday Meeting, I came up with this idea for a song.
A mighty man of God always follows and obeys.
He listens carefully and he show us how to pray....
Blah, blah, blah.....here
I'll be a mighty man of God someday....
This is the rough draft. I sat at the piano and plucked out the melody that was playing in my head. Then I added some basic chords along with the words that came to me. I played it over and over, refining the rhyming of the words and the chord structure. I'd say it's about half way finished. Next week I'll finish it up. I like to give a song some "breathing" space as I write it so that the music and words have time to mesh together in my mind and on the paper. Only when it's finished in pencil I go to the computer and put it into my finale program.
The steps to writing a song are just about the same as writing fiction. First you get the idea, then you brainstorm, refine, rewrite, hash it out--read it out loud or sing it out loud, record it, listen and rework it until the song says, "I'm done". That's what I do when I write a song.
